Welcome Fellow Travelers,
I humbly offer the idea that we are all Travelers along this crazy journey called Life! Some of us have well defined road maps, while others journey by instinct, blazing new trails for others to follow. I personally fall somewhere in between. So please join me as we explore together.
This is a brief post just to let everyone know that I'm rebooting my blog BlackGround Voices! in which I explore pop culture, film, TV, comics, games and music through the lens of Afrofuturism!
What is Afrofuturism, you may ask? Well, first of all, it’s a kick-ass sounding word. But in all seriousness, Afrofuturism is an ethos, a world-view, a rising consciousness which seeks to imagine a new future for black people in the modern age.
Afrofuturism strives to understand how the past shapes the present and influences the future. Digital technologies, especially those surrounding social media, can now be used to allow people of color to re-connect, share knowledge, and determine their own futures. For centuries, much of the black experience has been redacted, hidden or misconstrued by Eurocentric agendas; the truth has been buried in reams of legal documents, media images, and sterile textbooks.
Now the digital age offers unprecedented levels of freedom, access to information and intellectual stimulation that create a new paradigm in which people of color can become self deterministic instead of reactionary. Amid the current backdrop of global unrest, fueled by COVID-19 and the Black Lives Matter protests, perhaps we can find heightened urgency to reclaim our history from an authentic position of renewed black consciousness.
Join me on this adventure, as we explore these ideas, using the lens of Afrofuturism to better understand this crazy trip called life!
